Using dust-free temporary surface boards for wood dust protection

If you work in construction, there’s a good chance that you know that wood dust is dangerous. It’s been linked to a number of health problems – including cancer! So it’s no surprise that there’s a growing movement to protect workers from wood dust exposure.

One way to do this is by using dust-free boards for construction projects. These boards are made of particle board or other materials that don’t create dust when they’re cut or sanded. Dust-free boards are becoming more popular as people become aware of the dangers of wood dust. And they’re not just for big construction projects – you can use them for smaller projects around the house, too.

If you’re doing any woodworking, whether it’s building a deck or just sanding some furniture, consider using dust-free boards to protect yourself from wood dust exposure.

Unlike the two most common impact protection boards currently used in Australian construction, our boards are free from the risk of wood dust and formaldehyde. This means that you can achieve an equal or better surface protection outcome when compared with MDF and particle board, however without the consequences that can include:

  • skin disorders such as allergic dermatitis – certain timbers are known to produce adverse health effects
  • asthma and impaired lung function
  • nose irritation
  • rhinitis (runny nose)
  • violent sneezing
  • blocked nose and nose bleeds
  • throat irritation
  • sore and watering eyes
  • nasal cancer, and more.

Using alternatives such as our heavy duty Chief Board, medium duty Chief Board, and heavy duty Aero board also enable you to avoid expensive preventative measures such as exhaust ventilated cutting rooms and ducted cutting equipment.

As a result of this, the price of construction lumber has hit record highs. The cost of an annual subscription to the Random Lengths construction lumber Composite Price hit $1,008 in mid-May, up from $458 at the start of 2020. The price of construction lumber has begun to stabilise in recent weeks as mills have ramped up production and the market has adjusted to the new reality of higher prices. But even with the recent stabilisation, the cost of construction lumber is still more than double what it was just a few months ago.
