Proper Building Site Safety

Did you know 28% of injuries on a construction site are caused by falls, trips, and slips?

In this month's blog, I'll be focusing on the all important topic of construction safety on a building site! There are so many factors that contribute to a safe site, but let's stick to the basics, such as preventing trip or slip hazards, and keeping people out of onsite danger zones.

According to Safe Work Australia, 28% of injuries on a construction site are caused by falls, trips, and slips! A further 17% were attributable to injuries relating to being hit by moving objects (e.g. vehicles or construction machinery).

While we can't prevent ALL trips and slip incidents, our Safety and Pedestrian Walkway products can certainly reduce the risk of these events occurring. For example, our range of site safety products includes an anti-slip surface that can be applied to potential trip hazards. This is perfect for areas like walkways, ramps, and stairs where people are constantly moving around.

But I thought I should write a little bit about some of Honcho’s best site safety products and how they can best help your construction site.

Safety walkway mats

Our Safety Walkway Mats are now being included in a growing number of site must-have items. Why? Our high visibility site safety mats are used to create a safe, slip-resistant walkway onsite. The perfect place for our mats is in high foot traffic zones where the ground is uneven like on gravel, rocks, mud and even snow, or between site sheds. The mats also create the perfect delineation between pedestrian and vehicular areas, keeping people out of danger zones. Our range of Boss Mats have a P4 slip rating for ultimate walkway safety.

Adhesive mats

Our range of Temporary Adhesive Mats adhere to the substrate, greatly reducing the risk of trip hazards. Adhesive Mats overlap each other during application, so once down, they will stay in place for the duration of the project. The mats also have a P4 slip rating, which means they’re safe for a variety of commercial site uses.

Tips for preventing slips, trips, and falls on site

While we at Honcho supply a range of the best quality site protection products you’ll find across Australia, it’s also worth noting that there are still some common sense tips you can keep in mind for a DIY approach to construction safety!

Just a few of the simple measures you can remember or enforce on your site to prevent slips, trips, and falls can include:

  • Keeping walkways clear of debris and clutter
  • Ensuring that floor surfaces are non-slip (which, yes, is best done with our range of floor mats and walkway surfaces – don’t forget about those!)
  • Providing adequate lighting in all areas

As a result of this, the price of construction lumber has hit record highs. The cost of an annual subscription to the Random Lengths construction lumber Composite Price hit $1,008 in mid-May, up from $458 at the start of 2020. The price of construction lumber has begun to stabilise in recent weeks as mills have ramped up production and the market has adjusted to the new reality of higher prices. But even with the recent stabilisation, the cost of construction lumber is still more than double what it was just a few months ago.
